As a person of mixed culture, I am fascinated by other cultures just as I am my own. Through my experiences of living in one of the world’s most exotic cultural crossroads, it is no wonder that a delight for such diversity and a hunger to venture into the world to further experience such variety of culture was created within me. It is this desire and yearning for the uniqueness of people’s varying ways of life that is reflected in my work, and I make this evident by fusing together visual elements that have opposing qualities, thus creating harmony out of dissonance. After a decade working as a graphic designer, I transitioned into exploring just exactly how my heritage and past formed me through contemplation and a change in art medium.
Quite by accident, and very much to my surprise, I found myself gravitating towards clay. Clay most directly captures fluid energy by its own nature while simultaneously requiring patient and methodical manipulation. This in itself stands as a metaphor for the East and West push and pull of the cultural paradox of Istanbul. My pieces mix motifs from past cultural references through my two-dimensional and graphic design background and outlook. Thus, my strong sense of graphic style tends to produce a focus on crisp geometry, which then is mingled with the Arabesque fluidity of “Turkish Calligraphy”. Strong texture against clean edges creates a sense of tension, and it is this visual tension that illustrates those cultural tensions which may be understood through the experiences brought by the merging of cultures and religions.
