Paintings 2013-2015, Mascha’s first expressions on large canvas are an exercise in chaos and control. The canvas is placed on the floor and in the initial chaotic layer; paint is dripped, splattered and smeared from all sides making the paintings truly omnidirectional. Additional brushwork is in dialog with the original layer of chaos and a power washer is sometimes used to soften discord.
“Multi layered and seemingly spontaneous my large scale paintings try to maintain a balance of chaos and control and should be considered as environmental paintings providing the space that they control with a sense of comfort, similar to looking at the sky through a tree”. Mascha explained.
Mascha, An established photographer with an extensive portfolio of very unique artistic nudes, was an early adopter of digital photography and the founder and first Director of the University of Southern California E-lab, created in 1993. As an Assistant Professor for Visual Anthropology, he taught some of the first University-level courses ever offered on Internet technology and digital imaging. Also during his tenure at USC, he worked with Dr. Jane Goodall on a series of innovative interactive visual media projects. Dr. Mascha holds a PhD in Visual Anthropology and Communication Science from the University of Vienna.
