Era of Transformation is a collaborative exhibit that evokes concern about the state of mother earth, humanity’s evolution and spirituality. Emerging artists Deena Barton, Roman Hernandez, Martha Herrera, Michael Holmes, Fatima Lai, Veronica Mariscal, Venessa Mata, Marivel Ortiz, and Natalie White spent 10 months in dialogue discussing the power of art and how it impacts their personal lives. They shared stories about how they were personally transformed, secrets about their gift(s) and critiqued their artwork in progress. Dialogue evolved into how creativity impacts art education especially their students in the classroom, art education and the discourse of art.
They are witness to the central idea that art can transform a being in ways beyond our wildest imagination. Marivel Ortiz says that “Art has the power to touch anyone and everyone, even the novice art enthusiast such as our students.” These artists’ possess incredible passion and essence which mystically transfers during the creative processes and transcends from object onto the viewer’s mind to make connections or understand ideas worthy of our era.
The artists also researched and gathered materials from various sources such as household objects, flea market finds and even dumpster diving in Brownsville and Harlingen. Their purpose to implement and utilize objects that possess a history of human essence or manipulation, evidence of technological use/waste and repurpose into innovative artwork addressing humanity’s challenge to save mother earth in this era of transformation .
The presentation of this collaborative artwork alludes to wisdom, imagination and innovation for the sake of humanity’s survival. The artistic challenge to collaborate on one creation from conception to finished form would transform more than mind or materials.
